For Solace and its Clinical Director Dr. Prem Shanmugam, the new year started with an official invitation to present at the first 2019 addiction science conference in the country.

Jointly organized by Pertubuhan Doktor – Doktor Islam Malaysia (PERDIM) and the University Malaya Centre of Addiction Sciences(UMCAS), the Mental Health and Addiction Conference 2019 (MHAC) took place from the 25th to the 27th of January at the Premeira Hotel in the bustling capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

General practitioners, medical doctors, researchers, academicians, students and healthcare professionals from all over the country gathered to attend the three days scientific program.

Among the prestigious guests in attendance was Member of Parliament Ms. Nurul Izzah Anwar, whom officiated the conference with an insightful opening speech. Also present was Malaysia’s Minister of Health Dr.Haji Dzulkefly whom together with other government representatives, attentively received Dr. Prem Shanmugam presentation.

Delivered on the opening day during a gala dinner organized for the dignitaries in attendance, Dr. Prem’s presentation focused on addiction as a family illness, the importance of the family when treating addiction and the necessary healthy and supportive system needed at home for an optimal recovery.

After successfully providing an interdisciplinary forum for government agencies, private clinics, hospitals and universities to synchronize their approach towards addiction and mental health in the nation, the event successfully came to an end on the 27th of January 2019 with the promise of proving once again the same educative platform in 2020.

To educate family members on the illness of addiction and how to live with a recovering addict, Solace conducts family workshops once every quarter of the year.
