When you hear the word “addiction” what comes to your mind? Most likely something related to alcohol and/or drugs comes to mind but there are many other types of addictions. One of the most relevant addictions in the technology age is an internet addiction and many people who struggle with this addiction may not even know that it exists. Here’s what you need to know about internet addiction:

1. There are multiple subtypes of internet addiction.

You might think internet addiction is only related to pornography but there are several other tupes of internet addiction that are far less recognized including video game addiction, compulsive information seeking, and online gambling addiction.

2. Internet addiction often co-exists with isolation.

It’s no surprise that during a year like 2020 internet addiction increased due to so many people being locked down and stuck at home alone with minimal social interaction. Current research is looking into the cognitive associations involved in internet addiction.

3. Symptoms can include physical and mental symptoms.

With excessive use of a computer or smart device as well as long hours spent on these devices, physical symptoms may include back strain, eye strain, carpal tunnel, and/or sleep deprivation and fatigue. Mental symptoms often include social isolation and symptoms of withdrawal such as agitation, depression, and/or anger when away from technology.

4. Treatment for internet addiction is sparse.

Due to the fact that internet addiction is not a recognized mental health disorder at this time, treatment programs to address such are very limited. If you or someone you love are struggling with any of the aforementioned internet addiction symptoms, you can find professional help by contacting Solace Asia at 012.885.4686.
