Sometimes a drug or alcohol addiction is very easy to see but other times an individual may be struggling with a substance addiction and the signs are not as obvious as you would think. If you are concerned that your loved one might be struggling with a hidden addiction, here are some signs and symptoms to look for.
Mood Swings
While we all have good and bad days, this is referring to atypical changes in mood such as unexplained irritability or becoming angry easily. Having an off day is common but sudden and long lasting personality changes are not.
Changes in Physical Appearance
Unexplained and sudden weight loss or gain is usually cause for concern from a medical standpoint and can be indicative of substance abuse. A “sunken in” face or changes in color may also be a warning sign.
Trouble Concentrating or Remembering
Inability to recall recent events, what they did over the weekend, and/or difficulty concentrating are all reasons to be concerned. Other cognitive signs include “spacing out” during conversations or meetings or an otherwise very competent employee suddenly making more mistakes than usual.
Sudden Financial Difficulty
Certainly everyone going through a hard time financially is not struggling with substance abuse. The difference here is that the difficulty is sudden and unexplained (no job loss, medical expenses, etc.). Of note, this sign may coincide with other types of addiction such as gambling.
